About Thaao Penghlis:
Emmy-nominated actor, Thaao Penghlis was born and raised in Sydney, Australia as the son of Greek immigrants. Despite his brooding good looks, his first instinct was not to go into acting, but into Archaeology. Instead, he became a young career diplomat, working with the immigration service to help Greek immigrants who were seeking Australian citizenship. He trained for three years to become involved in the Diplomatic Corps, but gradually realized that his whole life centered around Greek happenings, so he took a leave of absence to find his own identity and went to work for the United Nations in New York.
While he was in New York, he met a teacher and director, Milton Katselas, who inspired him to pursue an acting career. He quit his job at the UN, worked as an apprentice art dealer during the day (specializing in eighteenth-century and Chinese art) and studied acting at night.
Eventually he worked as an assistant to Katselas in New York. When Katselas moved to Los Angeles to set up his studio and school at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, Thaao went west also and helped direct a number of plays. He appeared in other productions in Los Angeles and to New York where he starred in the Jules Stein/ Katselas production of ‘Jockeys.’ He finally landed his first starring film role in John Avildson’s film ‘Slow Dancing in the Big City’ followed by Ken Russell’s “Altered States” with William Hurt, and as Dame Edna’s love interest in ‘les Patterson Saves the World.’ He also played the lead role as Nicholas Black in the television series, “Mission: Impossible,” and starred in several mini-series, including “Tribe,” “Memories of Midnight,” and “Under Siege”.
After six years of carefully building his career, Thaao took the part of Victor Cassadine on ‘General Hospital,’ where he gathered such a strong following that ABC received thousands of letters asking that they bring him back after his story line came to an end. Before ABC was able to do that, NBC offered him the part of Count Anthony DiMera on “Days Of Our Lives” keeping him on the popularity charts for another 10+ years.
However, Penghlis never left behind his true calling, eventually investigating the world’s most sacred sites – including Machu Picchu, traveling through the jungles of the Amazon, all areas of the Middle East, as well as many tours through his ancestral home of Greece and ultimately a visit to what he considers his greatest love: Mt. Sinai in Egypt – to which Penghlis will be returning soon for a Eleventh visit. This past year he starred in the film ‘The Green Story,’ and on stage he was seen in the sold-out play ‘Class’ on the East Coast, where he also performed his one-man show called ‘Journeys.’ In 2012 he went on to star in the biblical ‘Story of Esther,’ and in 2013 Thaao is starring alongside Doris Roberts in Job’s Daughter and ‘Redeemed.’ He has just completed his book ‘Places, Journeys of My Days, My Lives.’ recalling some of those perilous journeys he experienced throughout Europe and the Middle East which will be published in the Spring/Summer of 2014. After 30 years he was just called back to revive Victor Cassadine on General Hospital.
As a self-described citizen of the world, Thaao makes his permanent home in the hills of Los Angeles, California.
