HOUSTON, TX, United States, via ETELIGIS INC., 04/15/2015 – – David Garner, Senior Vice President, Operations for Brenntag North America, Inc. in Reading, PA, received The Chlorine Institute’s 2015 Peter M. Mayo Award today at the Institute’s Annual Meeting in Houston.
In 2004, The Chlorine Institute (CI) created the Peter M. Mayo award to recognize an individual for service and safety leadership in the chlorine industry through participation in The Chlorine Institute. Sponsored by CI’s Board of Directors, the award is a living memorial to Peter M. Mayo, a leader in the industry, a strong supporter of safety excellence, and an active participant in CI for more than 30 years.
CI Chairman John Brenon explained why Mr. Garner was chosen to receive the Institute’s highest award. “David’s service to the industry and CI reflects his deep understanding that safety is a “team sport” with no ‘off-season’ and no ‘rain-delays.’ Member companies, their managers and personnel must be committed to safety – including preparation, training and outreach to customers – every day.”
At CI, Mr. Garner served on the board – including as Chairman, the Customer Stewardship Issue Team and key task groups. He led efforts to foster industry best practices, revise and update CI’s safety pamphlets and related materials, and assist member companies in promoting safety among their customers. He also spearheaded efforts to include all packagers as well as producers in CI’s CHLOREP (Chlorine Emergency Plan) mutual aid program that provides a rapid and effective response to chlorine emergencies in the U.S. and Canada.
A University of Kentucky chemical engineering graduate and long-time member of the Brenntag family, Mr. Garner was named Senior Vice President, Operations in 2012. He is responsible for all operations, distribution, quality, safety, health and environmental performance for Brenntag’s North American facilities.
In presenting the award, Mr. Brenon said, “David has been a safety visionary, leader and mentor at CI for more than 20 years. His commitment to safety, the industry and the Institute fit the values reflected in the Peter Mayo Award to a ’T’.”
